Custard French Toast Casserole – a Breakfast Favorite, Elevated

Custard French Toast Casserole – a Breakfast Favorite, Elevated

Back to Casa Ruffoni > Recipes

There’s nothing better than French toast – except, perhaps, a French toast casserole! This recipe, crafted by our Chef friend Aldana, transforms a classic breakfast favorite into an indulgent, crowd-pleasing dish that’s perfect for hosting brunch at home. With its layers of buttery caramelized sugar, custard soaked bread, and aromatic spices, it’s as beautiful to serve as it is delicious to eat.

Pair it with crispy bacon for a savory counterpoint, or take it to the next level with Aldana's Mixed Berry Sauce infused with star anise and cardamom for a fragrant, spiced twist.

Our tip? Bake it in a Serving Frying Pan, then bring it straight to the table for a home brunch with the wow factor!

Custard French Toast Casserole

Ingredients

    blank

    • 1 cup / 240 gr unsalted butter, melted

    • 1 packed cup / 200 gr brown sugar

    • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    • Pinch of salt

    blank

    • 2 loaves of brioche or challah bread, sliced into 1” (2.5 cm) thick slices, then cut into triangles

    • 6 large eggs

    • 1 cup / 240 ml whole milk

    • 1 cup / 240 ml heavy cream

    • 1/4 cup / 50 gr granulated sugar

    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    • Pinch of salt

    Instructions

    1. In a Serving Frying Pan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat until the butter begins to brown slightly and the sugar melts into a syrupy texture.

    2. Turn off the heat and stir in the cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.

    3. Arrange the sliced bread neatly over the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture in the Serving Frying Pan, then set aside.

    4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until smooth and fully combined.

    5. Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are well soaked. Cover the Serving Frying Pan with its lid and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This way, the custard will soak into the bread!

    6. Remove the Serving Frying Pan from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats to 350°F (175°C).

    7. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard has set.

    8. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, and drizzle with spiced berry sauce or maple syrup.
